PRIMARY PURPOSE AND GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES •Designs a variety of complex informational and promotional digital graphics •Creates design systems and updates for university web sites •Designs and develops UI standards for university websites and the university web framework •Collaborates with content team, creative team, video/photography team and leadership team to identify and plan priorities; participates in team meetings to develop concepts and discuss projects to meet objectives, mentors and provides technical direction for designers and developers •Identifies needs and shares information by collecting and reviewing analytics •Assists departmental leadership to identify professional development opportunities for the digital team
Specific Skills Advanced knowledge of digital communication and design, creative use of type and illustration, understanding of digital information design and delivery, HTML, Adobe creative suite; working knowledge of CSS, JavaScript, digital animation; strong communication skills; experience working in a team; strong leadership and decision-making skills; bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a design/communications related field or equivalent combination of education and experience; demonstrated experience and portfolio; demonstrated experience working in/fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Description:
This position will play an essential role in helping us continuously enhance our digital products through human-centered design methods. In this role, you will work closely with subject matter experts to understand the unique and specialized business requirements of our software applications and websites. These products help save and improve the lives of patients waiting for an organ transplant. You will bring those requirements to life through a deep understanding of user needs to create intuitive user experiences and enhance customer satisfaction.
We’re seeking a designer with a deep interest in research, strong listening and analytical skills, who is curious, open-minded, and always learning. You’ll conduct in-depth interviews with customers and business stakeholders to gain insights and translate them into user flows, customer journey maps, wireframes and low- and high-fidelity prototypes. As you learn, you’ll quickly synthesize research, invite customers to provide feedback and iterate on designs. You will use research insights to quickly prototype and test solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Work closely with subject matter experts to improve digital products through human-centered design methods. Conduct in-depth interviews with customers, users and business stakeholders to collect valuable research insights. Use qualitative and quantitative data such as surveys, heatmaps, Google Analytics, task analysis and other information to understand user behavior and identify areas of improvement. Translate concepts into end-to-end user flows, customer journey maps, wireframes and prototypes that lead to intuitive user experiences and customer satisfaction. Proactively collaborate with IT teams and provide front-end development support as necessary to ensure visual systems standards are met, are mobile focused and support current platforms.
Minimum Requirements:
5 years of UX design experience. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience designing for multi-faceted software.
Critical Skills:
Clear understanding of human-centered design and design thinking. Excellent visual design and composition skills. Strong listening and interview skills; experience in conducting user interviews to gather design insights. Experience in planning and conducting user research, user testing, A/B testing and rapid prototyping. Strong writing abilities; experience in forming or collaborating on research guides. Ability to quickly synthesize research, create prototypes and iterate designs. Highly fluent in prototyping software. (Adobe XD and Axure is a plus) Deep understanding of mobile-first and responsive design with usability best practices.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
Proficiency in HTML5 and CSS3. Experience with Bootstrap framework helpful. Ability to effectively communicate design thinking, future state ideas, and product solutions. Ability to work effectively in a team setting including synthesizing abstract ideas into concrete design implementations. Adaptable and capable of working in a fast-paced environment. An active listener. Open to constructive feedback and new ways to solve problems. Passionate about improving customer experience through design thinking and user research.
Education:
4-year degree in UX design, IT or other related course of study, or an equivalent level of professional work experience.
