Charlottesville Design Week

The Charlottesville Design Week is completely volunteer-led and has two simple goals:

  1. Develop a strong design community in central Virginia
  2. Convince the general public that good design is worth a damn

Whether you push pixels, press ink, set type, build environments, or do anything else design-related, you will feel right at home during our growing festival.

Hello!

In case you’re interested in picking up a new skill (or two)…

World-class teachers, small classes, just $30 per ticket: This year’s workshops are the best the Charlottesville Design Week has ever hosted.

By the way, if you already have your ticket to the Forum, then you get one workshop for free!

Here are the workshops, all taking place Thursday, April 11:

Comic Journaling

with Hannah Good (The Washington Post) from 9:30 – 11:30am at Vault Virginia

Unleash your creativity with comic journaling! Join Hannah Good and learn how to use comics to document your experiences, thoughts, and emotions. This hands-on workshop is perfect for anyone looking to explore the intersection of art and personal expression.

How to build a Design System

with Jeremy Dizon (AirBnb, Lyft, Disney) from 9:30 – 11:30am at Vault Virginia

We’ll take a popular streaming product and discuss how consistency and quality can help build products more efficiently. Then you’ll get a chance to apply what you’ve learned to build your own design system.

Redesign an Everyday Object

with Michael Di Genova (Work Louder) from 9:30 – 11:30am at Vault Virginia

Learn how to assess and break apart the things we take for granted. Then see how to put them back together more meaningfully and thoughtfully.

Letterpress Printing

with Garrett McQueen (Virginia Humanities) from 12:30 – 2:30pm at Virginia Center for the Book

Letterpress is back in a big way. This letterpress demonstration gives you hands-on experience with lead type, forms, a Vandercook “Proofing Press,” and printing. You’ll run the press, make a poster, and leave with some new skills.

Custom Brand Type

with Mike Ryan (Journey Group) from 12:30 – 2:30pm at Journey Group

Don’t settle for just a brand “font”. Explore methods to customize type — to pair with your brand’s icon, or just for kicks! This workshop will be facilitated by Mike Ryan, principal and studio director at Journey Group.

Animation Principles

with Matt Darnall (Hue+Cry) from 12:30 – 2:30pm at Vault Virginia

With this hands-on workshop, we will explore the potential of variable fonts on the web. We will cover how you might take advantage of the relatively new font format, from fine-tuning typography to animation. Participants will have access to a template for a single-serve website, along with variable typefaces for testing. Familiarity with HTML and CSS is helpful but not required; a willingness to engage with code is required.

Brand Mark Design

with Jeremy Cherry (Journey Group) from 3:00 – 5:00pm at Journey Group

Work with the director of Journey Group’s brand studio, Jeremy Cherry, to develop a distinctive icon for the organization of your choosing — or one that you just made up on the spot.

Navigating the Nuances of Novel Numerics

with Eddie Opara (Pentagram) from 3:00 – 5:00pm at Vault Virginia

Navigating the Nuances of Novel Numerics is a conceptual workshop designed for budding numerologists-cum-designers eager to explore the world of numeric design. This session delves into the art and science of creating unique, experimental numerics. Participants will engage in hands-on activities to design their own numeric fonts design. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of numerics and the skills to experiment with their own designs.

Signage Walking Tour

with Nikki Villagomez from 3:00 – 5:00pm meeting outside Vault Virginia

Get ready for an exciting typographic adventure in the charming city of Charlottesville. This workshop, guided by Nikki Villagomez, will have you exploring the city in a whole new perspective. Lace up your sneakers and grab your cameras, we will be diving into the world of typography, lettering, and urban design. You’ll be documenting the typography unique to the city and sharing your findings with fellow participants. Neon signs, building signs, wayfinding, ghost signs, murals, graffiti, and manhole covers are what we’ll be discovering. Whether you’re a typography enthusiast, a designer, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of language in the urban landscape, this workshop is for you.
