Caroline Scruggs – Mini Concert at The Branch – Wednesday, March 22, 2023

Caroline Scruggs is a thereminist, vocalist, and songwriter from Hampton Roads, Virginia. A life-long musician, she began playing the violin at age 5, pursued a degree in classical Vocal Performance at Christopher Newport University, and went on to make a name for herself as a vocalist in the traditional/swing jazz genres from Virginia to New Orleans.

Upon “discovering” the theremin 5 years ago, she became completely enamored with the instrument – the first
electronic instrument invented & one of the only ones played without physical touch – as its ethereal, string-like sound feels like a second voice under her hands. Her performance of Linda Kernohan’s Theremin Concerto with the
Central Ohio Symphony in June of 2022 has been viewed 3 million times. Caroline has written, directed, and performed a hybrid concert and one-woman show, L’EspaceEntre les Étoiles, about her journey with the creative process combined
with playing and singing French Art Song. She incorporates theremin into her live solo performances & original musical works too, creating colorful harmonies with her voice, loop station, and an array of unique instruments.

As a self-taught thereminist, Caroline has been featured playing theremin in a TikTok commercial with LL Cool J, has collaborated with Moog Music inc. with her original theremin music, and has done consulting work around theremin for a tv show. She was also a featured artist of 2021 for WHRO Public Media. Now she is finishing up her first full length album as a solo singer/songwriter… with theremin woven throughout the record, of course.

Caroline’s passion to share the magic of the theremin, be it through performance, workshops or lessons, will
leave you with an unforgettable impression of this truly unique instrument and its vibrant player.
