A battered economy, repeat rounds of layoffs and increased competition for services make finding work a real challenge for designers these days. As word-of-mouth is one of the strongest ways to draw business, networking during times like these is essential.

Two factoids: 1.) As designers and creative professionals, we all need to network and 2.) None of us network enough. So AIGA and Aquent have teamed up to offer “Nothing but Net,” a speed networking event to help our brothers and sisters in design connect with people who need your services.

Here’s how it works: instead of standing around awkwardly trying to force conversation, participants are divided into groups. As you arrive, you will be given a card with a list of which tables you will go to and the order in which you will go to them. The host will let you know when to start and how much time you will have to network at each table.

To begin, participants introduce themselves, and then refer to a tent card with a list of design questions. A facilitator at each table will answer questions, help lead the discussion and move the conversation along to make sure everyone has a chance to give an answer. Sample questions may include: “What is your biggest challenge in finding employment?”

Appetizers will be provided and a cash bar is available. Be sure to bring a stack of business cards with you so you can pass them out.

Take the pain out of networking – join us to make the most contacts you can in the least amount of time!

This event is FREE and open to all.

Unfortunately, I couldn't attend this event but it looked like lots of fun. What great press coverage! Kudos to Aquent and the organizers of this event.

Wow. What a great event! Perfect venue. Good food. LOTS of conversation. What a networking event should be. Thanks to all who participated. Hope you connected with the people, ideas, and tricks-of-the-trade to get you where you want to be.

To anyone interested, its going to be loads of fun, and a great way to polish your people skills. Even if you have an job, it never hurts to network and meet other people in the community. Especially in a city this small.
