A fundamental shift is going on in design: control is passing from designers to users. Now more than ever design audiences are demanding control—over the way design solutions look, behave, respond to their needs, even over how design is delivered. NYTimes.com Design Director Khoi Vinh takes a closer look at how the industry-leading news site is meeting the challenges posed by this shift. Along the way, he charts the course of his own career as a Web designer, and how his fundamental approach to design has evolved with the Web.

Khoi VinhKhoi Vinh Khoi Vinh is the Design Director for NYTimes.com, where he leads the in-house design team in user experience innovation. He is also the author of the popular design weblog Subtraction.com, where he writes extensively on design, technology and user experience matters of all kinds. Previously, Khoi was the co-founder of the award-winning New York design studio Behavior, LLC. He studied communication design at Otis School of Art and Design in Los Angeles, and practiced branding and graphic design in print for several years in Washington, D.C., before moving to New York.

Wow, Brandon, that's an excellent question and I see you're point. As a web designer I think the challenge is making the user feel like that have control and the ability to 'redesign' while we as the designer create an environment that can be modular and still maintain an overall integrity regardless of the choices of the user. But alas, here lies the conundrum. I hope you make it. I would love to hear Khoi's response to it.

Interesting question, Brandon. I'm sure one that Khoi would love to field. Be sure to register early and get your ticket. Don't know if you've been to Art6, but seating REALLY is limited.

question? I don't actually expect a response, however, will Khoi Vinh be discussing the difference between the relativity of design within a user & defining the applications of design within a user? Maybe this is me being ignorant, but Design in itself is to communicate ideas/meanings/messages/expressions through associations that related to visual, audio, and touch. If ever design audiences are demanding controlover the way design solutions look, behave, etc., then such an audience would be designing based off there understanding design? maybe? I don't know, however I am intrigued and very excited.
